Founded in 1842 by Father Edward Sorin, a French priest, the University of Notre Dame began as a small school on donated land in Indiana. With strong Catholic roots, it quickly grew to include various academic disciplines. Notre Dame gained national prominence in the early 20th century due to its successful football program under legendary coach Knute Rockne. Over the years, the university expanded its offerings, transitioned to lay governance, and solidified its reputation as a leading Catholic research institution. Today, Notre Dame is renowned for its academic programs, strong sense of community, and enduring Catholic identity.
