The Jordan Faison Story: From Walk-On Wonder to “Flax” Star

If you’ve been watching Notre Dame football or lacrosse over the last few years, you know the name Jordan Faison. But even for the most dedicated Irish fans, his rise from a “who is that?” walk-on to one of the most dynamic athletes in South Bend has been nothing short of legendary.

The Walk-On Who Stole the Show

Jordan arrived on campus in 2023 primarily as a highly touted lacrosse recruit. Because he was on a lacrosse scholarship, he joined the football team as a walk-on. It didn’t take long for Coach Marcus Freeman and the staff to realize they had a diamond in the rough.

His breakout came against Louisville in 2023, where he caught a 36-yard touchdown on just his second collegiate reception. By the end of that season, he wasn’t just a “rotational piece”—he was the Sun Bowl MVP, torching Oregon State for 115 yards and a touchdown. That performance officially earned him a football scholarship and solidified his place in Irish lore.

The “Flax” Factor

Faison often refers to himself as a “flax” player—a football/lacrosse hybrid. His impact isn’t limited to the gridiron:

  • National Champion: In the spring of 2024, he helped lead the Notre Dame lacrosse team to a second consecutive NCAA National Championship, scoring 22 goals as a freshman.
  • Speed & Versatility: His lacrosse background is evident in his football play. His “lacrosse cuts,” elite acceleration, and ability to navigate tight spaces make him a nightmare for defensive backs.

2025: A Year of Growth

In the 2025 season, Faison stepped up as a veteran leader. He was named a Burlsworth Trophy Semifinalist (the award for the nation’s best player who started as a walk-on). He led the Irish receiving corps with 49 receptions for 640 yards and 4 touchdowns, including a massive 105-yard performance in the win over Purdue.

Looking Ahead: Football First in 2026

The biggest news for Irish fans recently is Faison’s decision to focus fully on football starting in the spring of 2026. While he’s been a vital part of the lacrosse dynasty, he is turning his attention toward his senior football season to maximize his impact on the offense and his future prospects.

This move also coincides with the arrival of his brother, Dylan Faison, a heralded recruit who plans to follow in Jordan’s two-sport footsteps. While we might not see the Faison brothers teaming up on the lacrosse field this spring, the prospect of them together in the stadium is enough to get any Notre Dame fan excited.

Jordan Faison represents everything we love about Notre Dame: hard work, versatility, and the “Next Man Up” mentality taken to the highest level.

Go Irish!
